Santa Cruz de Tenerife is set to revitalize the long-abandoned Viera y Clavijo Park by transforming the historic site into a new CaixaForum cultural hub, with the first phase of restoration expected to conclude by the end of the year.

The Viera y Clavijo Park in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is finally nearing completion, ending two decades of abandonment. Thanks to a new partnership between the City Council and the Island Council, the historic site is set to be revitalized. Architect Fernando Menis is leading the project, which will transform the former La Asunción school—originally opened in 1907—into the new CaixaForum Tenerife, a hub for science and the arts.

The project is divided into two stages. The first phase, backed by €17 million from the city and regional government, focuses on restoring the main building and updating the gardens, playground, and surrounding square. These works are expected to finish by the end of the year, with a gradual opening scheduled for February. The second phase, made possible by the new funding agreement, involves demolishing the old Pérez Minik Theater to build an underground auditorium beneath a new public square, which will allow the cultural center to become fully operational.

This project goes beyond simple restoration. The original plans were adjusted to create more exhibition space, meeting the needs of the ”la Caixa” Foundation, which will manage the site. For local officials, this is a major step toward revitalizing the city’s cultural scene. By restoring this long-neglected landmark, Santa Cruz de Tenerife will join a network of nationally recognized cultural centers, turning a once-forgotten space into a premier regional destination.
