Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s ‘Sunday Consumption Vouchers’ Initiative Sees Near-Perfect Debut
Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s "Bonos Consumo Domingo" initiative achieved a 99.92% redemption rate during its debut, prompting the City Council to expand the local retail subsidy program.
The launch of the "Bonos Consumo Domingo" (Sunday Consumption Vouchers) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has been a major success, according to the municipal Development Society. Designed to boost local retail, the initiative generated over 28,000 euros in spending during its debut, which coincided with the city’s Plenilunio event.
The program allows shoppers to buy 25 euros worth of goods for half price. The response was nearly perfect: out of 1,200 vouchers released, 1,137 were used, marking a 99.92% success rate. Thirty-one local businesses participated, with six of them hitting the 1,500-euro limit set by the city.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez praised the subsidy model, noting that it helps local shops stay competitive against larger retailers. Carmen Pérez, CEO of the Development Society, highlighted the high demand, pointing out that 11 businesses nearly reached their redemption limits, with only 21.33 euros left unspent across the entire program.
Following this successful start, the City Council has confirmed the program will continue. A new batch of 1,263 vouchers is now available on the official website. Sales will follow a weekly schedule, opening every Friday and closing at noon on Sunday. These vouchers are part of a broader effort to support small businesses and encourage local spending during quieter periods or special events.
