Santa Cruz de Tenerife Reopens La Rosa Street Following Major Urban Renewal Project
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has officially reopened La Rosa Street following a three-year, six-million-euro urban renewal project that modernized infrastructure and prioritized pedestrian accessibility in the El Toscal neighborhood.
La Rosa Street in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has officially reopened, marking a major milestone in the city’s urban renewal efforts. The project took three years to complete—a year longer than originally planned—and cost six million euros, making it one of the most significant city center renovations in the last decade.
The work was technically challenging, as crews discovered historical cisterns and undocumented private pipes underground. Despite these hurdles, the project successfully overhauled the area’s sanitation, water, telecommunications, and lighting systems. Municipal officials state that these invisible but essential upgrades will ensure the infrastructure remains efficient for the next 70 years.
The 650-meter street has been completely transformed. Sidewalks have been widened to two meters, and 42 new trees, including two palms, have been planted. This reflects a growing trend in Spanish cities to prioritize pedestrians and sustainability. While the project eliminates street-level parking, the City Council plans to offset this by providing 70 spaces in a nearby lot.
Starting next week, mobility in the El Toscal neighborhood will improve with the launch of bus line 914, which will include two new stops. This project is part of a larger city plan that has already seen improvements to Méndez Núñez and San Martín streets, with future work planned for Santiago Street and Puerto Escondido.
Local residents and business owners have endured over 1,000 days of construction, which officials acknowledge was a difficult period for the neighborhood. To help the area recover, the City Council plans to assess the economic impact of the construction and launch initiatives this September to boost local business activity along the newly renovated street.
