Santa Cruz de Tenerife Receives Bids for €29.6 Million Bus Fleet Modernization
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has received bids from 16 entities for a €29.6 million contract to modernize its public transport fleet with 61 new hybrid, electric, and diesel vehicles.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is moving forward with a major upgrade to its public transport system. The City Council has received strong interest from the automotive market for a contract to supply 61 new vehicles, a project with a budget of 29.6 million euros. This initiative aims to modernize the municipal fleet by embracing a mix of new technologies.
The plan includes a diverse range of vehicles tailored to the city’s unique layout and passenger needs. The new fleet will consist of 40 hybrid buses, 17 electric buses, and four diesel units, ranging from compact minibuses to large 18-meter articulated buses. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez stated that this variety is essential for improving the efficiency and sustainability of the city’s transport network.
The tender has attracted significant attention, with 15 companies and one joint venture submitting bids. The list of interested manufacturers includes major international names such as BYD Motors, MAN, IVECO, Daimler Buses, and Scania, alongside several other specialized firms.
This project aligns with a nationwide trend among Spanish cities to shift toward low-emission fleets in line with European clean vehicle standards. Now that the submission period has closed, municipal experts will begin a thorough review of the proposals. The contract, which is divided into eight separate lots, will be awarded based on strict technical and financial criteria. Through this investment, the City Council hopes to provide residents with a more accessible and modern public transport system.
