Santa Cruz de Tenerife Prepares for Major Waste Management Contract Overhaul

Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has begun preparing for the future tender of its street cleaning and waste management contract, which is set to expire in November 2027. Carlos Tarife, the Councilor for Public Services, has commissioned an external audit to identify the current service's shortcomings and establish new efficiency standards for the next contract.

This study will provide the incoming administration, following the May municipal elections, with data on the city's actual needs. Independent experts will determine the staffing and machinery required to improve urban cleanliness and address ongoing public dissatisfaction.

In the meantime, the City Council has approved a contract modification worth over one million euros to address immediate issues. This includes tripling deep-cleaning operations from three to nine times per week and expanding the city-wide selective waste collection system.

The plan also introduces specialized mobile teams to focus on high-demand neighborhoods. These units will carry out 270 extra cleaning operations between 2026 and 2027, with a focus on clearing ravines and improving team coordination. Through this roadmap, the Public Services department aims to move toward a more effective management model based on clear technical criteria.
