Santa Cruz de Tenerife Police Invest €95,000 in Conducted Energy Devices

Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s local police are upgrading their equipment to better manage complex incidents. Following a recent municipal meeting, the City Council approved a €95,345 investment to purchase 15 conducted energy devices (CEDs).

These non-lethal tools are part of a broader security strategy focused on using proportional force. A key feature of these devices is an integrated camera that automatically records whenever the device is deployed. This ensures that every action is documented, providing transparency and legal protection for both officers and the public.

The contract covers more than just the devices themselves; the budget includes a complete support system, such as batteries, holsters, charging stations, and the software needed to manage and store digital evidence.

Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez stated that this purchase is part of an ongoing effort to modernize municipal resources, noting that better equipment leads to improved public safety. Gladis de León, the Councilor for Citizen Security, added that these tools provide a more balanced way to handle risky situations while ensuring that every use is properly supervised.

By adopting this technology, Santa Cruz de Tenerife joins other police forces across Spain that are moving toward less-lethal methods for handling aggressive individuals or those in crisis. The ability to audit these interactions through integrated recording systems is considered essential for maintaining public trust and upholding legal standards.
