Santa Cruz de Tenerife Overhauls Bus Network to Boost Punctuality and Capacity
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is investing 216,000 euros to restructure its bus network starting next Monday, aiming to improve punctuality and increase capacity across eight key routes.
Starting next Monday, Santa Cruz de Tenerife will restructure its bus network to address ongoing complaints about delays and poor punctuality. The City Council, working with the transport operator Titsa, is investing 216,000 euros to improve the frequency and capacity of eight bus lines serving the metropolitan area and summer routes to the Anaga coast.
The majority of this funding—151,500 euros—will focus on better connecting the city center with the Salud-La Salle, Ofra, and Suroeste districts. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez and Mobility Councilor Evelyn Alonso expect these changes to add over 282,000 seats and attract 81,500 new passengers annually. This initiative aims to encourage more people to use public transport instead of private cars, which often cause severe traffic congestion on roads leading to the city's beaches during the summer.
To keep buses moving during busy summer weekends, the City Council will introduce an exclusive bus lane on the road to Las Teresitas whenever high-temperature alerts are in effect. An additional 64,500 euros has been set aside to boost service on lines 910, 934, 936, and 948. Notably, line 910 will increase to 16 daily services, providing significantly more capacity for beachgoers. Line 946 will also add two extra vehicles on weekdays, while line 948 will run extra services on weekends and holidays.
While this plan excludes the Benijos and Las Gaviotas beaches due to safety concerns regarding unstable slopes, it does include operational changes for lines 934 and 936. By implementing these updates, the local government hopes to resolve long-standing issues with bus reliability. The success of the project will now depend on Titsa’s ability to manage the necessary staff and vehicles to meet the new, more demanding schedules.
