Santa Cruz de Tenerife on High Alert as Severe Storm Triggers Emergency Closures
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has raised its Municipal Emergency Plan to the highest level, closing all public facilities and cancelling events as severe weather causes flooding and landslides across the city.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is on high alert following a day of severe weather. The City Council has raised its Municipal Emergency Plan (PEMU) to the highest level after emergency services responded to 50 incidents this morning. Officials are taking these precautions due to the unpredictable nature of the storm currently moving across the islands.
The heavy rain has disrupted daily life and damaged local infrastructure. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez confirmed that the Andrés Reyes Institute was evacuated as a precaution, and the La Granja Park Citizen Information Center has closed due to flooding. Roads have also been affected; landslides were reported on the Jaúa road and near Los Lavaderos, where falling rocks damaged an empty parked car.
Under the highest alert level, all municipal facilities are closed, and all outdoor sports, cultural, and extracurricular events have been cancelled. The City Council is urging private businesses and other organizations to follow suit and is advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in the Anaga mountain area, where the risk of landslides is high.
This response is a proactive measure, as the storm—which has already hit Gran Canaria—is expected to intensify over Tenerife. While there have been no reported injuries, the city is prioritizing public safety by keeping beaches and sports facilities closed until further notice.
