Santa Cruz de Tenerife Names Square After Late Choreographer Geni Afonso
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has inaugurated a public square on Avenida Marítima in honor of the late choreographer Geni Afonso, celebrating her foundational contributions to the city's Carnival and cultural identity.
The capital of Tenerife has honored the memory of Geni Afonso by naming a public square after her, a move that celebrates her significant contributions to the city’s cultural identity. The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council officially dedicated the 350-square-meter space on the Avenida Marítima, located directly in front of the Cabildo headquarters, to the late choreographer and director, who was a key figure in the evolution of the local Carnival.
The decision received unanimous support from the municipal council following a campaign by local artists and cultural figures, including Pepe Benavente, who wanted to preserve Afonso’s legacy after her passing in 2023. At the inauguration, Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez and other local representatives highlighted Afonso’s role as a pioneer who helped shape the city’s festive spirit.
The ceremony featured a musical performance by the honoree’s brother, José Víctor Afonso, and a formal reading of the council’s decision. For the family, the square serves as a lasting connection between the artist’s career and the city she helped bring to life.
The location of the square is particularly meaningful. Situated on the Avenida Marítima, it sits at the heart of major Carnival events, including the Coso parade and the Rhythm and Harmony competition. By placing this tribute in such a prominent spot, the city council has ensured that Afonso’s influence on local culture remains a permanent part of the city’s landscape, keeping her memory alive for all who pass through.
