Santa Cruz de Tenerife Named Spanish Capital of Gastronomy for 2027
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has been unanimously named the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy for 2027, a title the city plans to leverage through its "Crossroads of Flavors" campaign to boost tourism and promote its culinary heritage.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has been named the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy for 2027, a milestone that promises to reshape the city’s tourism strategy. The decision, announced on Tuesday, September 8, was made unanimously by a jury representing key industry figures, including the Secretary of State for Tourism and major hospitality associations. The city will take over the title from Jerez de la Frontera, which holds the honor in 2026.
The award, established in 2012 to promote culinary heritage as a tourism draw, is more than just a symbolic title; it is a significant management task for the local council. Santa Cruz won the bid with its "Crossroads of Flavors" campaign, which featured a proposal designed to look like a cookbook. The city’s success builds on the existing "Degusta Santa Cruz" initiative, which works to connect local restaurants, markets, and shops.
While the title is prestigious, it does not come with direct state funding. The success of the year will depend on the City Council’s ability to organize and manage its own program. A dedicated technical office will oversee the events, which will be subject to standard procurement and budget availability. While the project has the support of the Island Council and the regional government, the specific budget and event calendar are still being finalized.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez sees this as a major opportunity to showcase local cuisine to the more than 3.4 million tourists and cruise passengers who visit the city each year. The challenge now for Santa Cruz is to turn this recognition into a lasting economic boost by creating a comprehensive 2027 program that combines professional training, cultural events, and the promotion of local products.
