Santa Cruz de Tenerife Launches Senior Travel Program to Combat Loneliness
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has launched a new travel program for residents aged 60 and over to combat elderly isolation and promote active aging through social engagement.
Local authorities in Santa Cruz de Tenerife are making the fight against elderly isolation a top priority, viewing shared social activities as a vital way to combat loneliness and cognitive decline. In partnership with the Island Institute for Social and Socio-sanitary Care (IASS), the City Council has launched a new travel program for seniors, designed not just as a holiday, but as a key public welfare initiative.
Registration opens on August 3 for residents aged 60 and over who have been registered in the municipality for at least three years. Applicants must also meet specific income and health requirements to qualify. The application window closes on August 28, and the final list of travelers will be announced on October 26.
The first trip is scheduled for November 14–19, 2026, to Granada. The cost is 233.31 euros, which includes flights from Tenerife North, transfers, four-star full-board accommodation, guided tours, insurance, and all planned activities. This is the first of three planned trips to the destination, with further dates to be announced soon.
These initiatives are part of a broader effort to promote "active aging," which helps seniors maintain their independence and stay connected to their community.
For more information on how to apply or what documents are needed, residents can visit the municipal website or call the 010 service during morning hours. After the provisional list is published on October 1, there will be a window until October 9 to correct any errors, with final payments due toward the end of October.
