Santa Cruz de Tenerife Launches Permanent Educational Program at Museum of Fine Arts
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has launched a permanent educational program at the Museum of Fine Arts, integrating interactive thematic routes into the local school curriculum to foster critical thinking among students.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has launched a new, permanent educational program at the Museum of Fine Arts, marking a major milestone for heritage education in the city. Announced by the City Council, the initiative aims to weave the museum into the local school system, perfectly timed with International Museum Day and its theme of using museums to bridge divides in a fragmented world.
Designed by education specialist Alejandra Arbizu, the program moves beyond the traditional museum tour. It offers an interactive learning model built around six thematic routes tailored for primary and secondary students. These routes align with core subjects like history, geography, literature, and philosophy. The City Council hopes students will do more than just view the museum’s collection—which features works from the 16th to the 20th century, including pieces by Juan de Miranda—and instead use the art to develop critical thinking and other essential skills.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez and Councilor for Culture Santiago Díaz Mejías emphasized that the museum is a pioneer in the Canary Islands and a vital tool for social cohesion. Beyond the classroom, the city is also hosting a series of public events leading up to May 18.
To celebrate, the museum will stay open until 8:00 p.m. and feature a special program centered on the temporary exhibition by Tanja Tamvelius. Curators Yolanda Peralta and Katarzyna Zych will host guided tours on May 18 and 19 at 12:00 p.m. Additionally, a family workshop titled "Tanja, an artist between worlds" will be held on May 16 and 17. Designed for children aged six and up, the workshop invites families to create a collective mural. Participation is free, but space is limited.
