Santa Cruz de Tenerife has launched urban renewal initiatives to develop the new Celia Cruz Square green space and renovate Juan Marín Vives Street to improve local infrastructure and accessibility.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is entering a key phase of urban renewal as the City Council moves forward with two projects designed to address long-standing needs in the capital. Officials have officially begun the administrative process to create the city's first major green space in the Cabo Llanos area and have launched plans to upgrade Juan Marín Vives Street in Llano del Moro.

The Cabo Llanos project, known as Celia Cruz Square, will be built on the plot between the area’s two towers. Fully funded by European grants, the 2.7-million-euro project was awarded to architects Romén Álvarez and Cristina González. The design features a 2,394-square-meter park with 175 trees, playgrounds, and space for catering services. According to Carlos Tarife, the Councilor for Public Services, the project is expected to go to tender this April, with construction slated to take 18 months.

While the project has received initial approval, it faces some technical hurdles. The Urban Planning Department requires the design to cover the entire plot as outlined in the city’s General Urban Development Plan. Additionally, there is a disagreement regarding parking: while Urban Planning suggested an underground lot, the Mobility department rejected the idea, citing the city’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan. The final design must also incorporate planned underground connections between Los Llanos 6 and Adán Martín Menis streets.

Meanwhile, the City Council is also focusing on the Southwest district with the renovation of Juan Marín Vives Street. This 665,000-euro project is scheduled to take six months and goes beyond simple repaving. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez confirmed that the work includes a complete overhaul of the area’s sanitation, water, irrigation, and lighting systems. Supported by district councilor Javier Rivero, the project aims to resolve long-standing accessibility issues for local residents and families at the nearby CEIP Matías Llabré Verd school.
