Santa Cruz de Tenerife Launches Major Cleanup Operation Ahead of Papal Visit
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has launched an emergency cleaning protocol and deployed additional staff and machinery to prepare the city for the upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is preparing for a major logistical operation ahead of the upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV. To manage the expected crowds, the city council has redesigned its urban management strategy and, in partnership with the firm Valoriza Servicios Medioambientales, has launched an emergency protocol to keep the city clean and well-maintained.
The cleanup effort will go beyond standard daily tasks, focusing on key areas such as the Plaza de España, the maritime avenue, and the port. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez stated that the goal is to ensure the city looks its best for this historic event. Carlos Tarife, the Councilor for Public Services, has asked residents to be mindful of their surroundings, noting the significant challenge of managing such a large-scale gathering.
To handle the extra workload, the city is adding 32 temporary workers to its regular cleaning crews. They will be equipped with extra machinery, including a street-washing tanker, a hydro-cleaning unit, two sweepers, and a collection truck. This plan is designed to ensure that cleaning and waste removal continue around the clock before, during, and after the Pope’s visit.
This mobilization highlights the difficulty of managing large events, where maintaining public spaces is essential for safety and order. Close coordination between the city and its service providers will be vital to ensuring that Tenerife’s infrastructure remains fully operational despite the massive influx of visitors.
