Santa Cruz de Tenerife is launching a €594,000 intelligent parking management system featuring real-time monitoring and a new mobile app to reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is set to upgrade its urban mobility over the next two months with the launch of a new intelligent parking management system. The city council has awarded a €594,000 contract to install ten dynamic information panels, a move designed to reduce traffic congestion and lower the city’s carbon footprint as part of its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS).

The project is currently in the setup phase and will monitor approximately 11,000 parking spaces in real time. This includes both public underground garages and participating shopping centers. Sensors and cameras will be placed at key locations throughout the city, including the north and south entrances, the Rambla, the bullring and Auditorium areas, and several major streets such as Bélgica Avenue and Bravo Murillo.

To support this, the city is developing a mobile app that will allow drivers to check for available parking before they even leave home. Councilwoman Evelyn Alonso noted that the system will be rolled out gradually as data from the various parking facilities is integrated.

Beyond parking, the city is modernizing its existing variable message signs. These older displays will be repurposed into real-time traffic management tools, providing drivers with instant updates on road closures, construction detours, and traffic incidents. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve the overall driving experience in the capital.
