Santa Cruz de Tenerife Launches Grant Program to Modernize Taxi Fleet Safety
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has launched a 45,000-euro grant program to help taxi drivers install security cameras and protective partitions to enhance safety for both staff and passengers.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is modernizing its taxi fleet to improve safety. The City Council has announced a preliminary list of 101 approved applications out of 126 submitted, providing funding for taxi drivers to install security cameras and protective partitions.
Managed by the Department of Mobility and Universal Accessibility, the initiative has a total budget of 45,000 euros. Each successful applicant can receive up to 300 euros to help cover the costs of purchasing and installing the new equipment. This list is currently provisional, and drivers who need to fix documentation errors or submit missing certificates have ten days to do so via the city’s Electronic Office or municipal notice board.
This move follows years of requests from taxi drivers for better protection while on the job. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez’s administration views the investment as a way to enhance safety for both drivers and passengers. Gladis de León, head of the Taxi Department, noted that the funding is designed to help the sector adopt technology that reduces risks during daily operations.
The final list of grant recipients will be confirmed once the current review period for claims and corrections is complete. Through this initiative, the City Council aims to standardize safety measures across the capital’s taxi fleet, which remains a vital part of the city’s public transport network.
