Santa Cruz de Tenerife has launched a €4.37 million project to modernize the Valleseco sewage network, introducing a separate rainwater system to improve flood resilience and urban sustainability.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife has reached a new milestone in upgrading its water infrastructure with the launch of the second phase of work in Valleseco. The project, which has a budget of 4.37 million euros, is part of the 2027-2030 Island Cooperation Plan and is being jointly funded by the City Council and the Island Council (Cabildo).

The project is essential because the current sewage network is aging and made of outdated concrete. The work will cover about 3,400 meters and involves more than just a simple replacement; it introduces a separate system for rainwater. This is a vital upgrade for modern urban management, as it improves drainage during heavy rain, reduces the risk of flooding, and helps the area better withstand extreme weather caused by climate change.

Administratively, the project is straightforward because all work will take place on municipal land, avoiding complex land-use issues. Once finished, the new network will connect directly to the coastal collector, allowing it to be used immediately. This phase builds on work started between 2018 and 2021, finally completing the renovation of the remaining hillside streets.

Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez noted that this investment follows a clear plan to fix long-standing issues in the neighborhood. Beyond the technical upgrades, the project meets modern urban sustainability standards, ensuring that basic public services keep pace with population growth while protecting the safety and well-being of residents. With this plan, the city aims to finish the modernization of the water system in this part of the capital.
