Santa Cruz de Tenerife has awarded a €316,359 contract to upgrade seven high-risk accident areas across the city to improve road safety and pedestrian accessibility.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is set to improve road safety by upgrading seven high-risk accident areas across the city. The local government has awarded a €316,359 contract to the company Señalizaciones Villa, with the project expected to take eight months to complete.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to balance heavy traffic with pedestrian safety—a common challenge in the city’s historic streets. The improvements will focus on several key locations, including Avenida Pico Teide, Avenida Benito Pérez Armas, Plaza de los Patos, and the streets of Marrero Torres, Alcalde Mandillo Tejero, Ganivet, and Princesa Guayarmina.

The project uses a variety of tailored solutions to address specific safety issues in each area:

  • Traffic Flow: A new roundabout will be built at the intersection of Avenida Pico Teide and Calle Volcán Chaorra to better manage vehicle movement.
  • Pedestrian Safety: High-traffic areas and school zones, such as Calle Masca and the area near Calle Marrero Torres, will receive new LED-lit pedestrian crossings. Tactile paving will also be installed to improve accessibility for everyone.
  • Urban Upgrades: Plans for Calle Princesa Guayarmina include widening sidewalks and adding landscaped traffic islands. Plaza de los Patos will feature a new "intelligent" pedestrian crossing system.
  • Infrastructure Repairs: Road surfaces will be renewed on Calle Sansón y Barrios, Calle Elisa González de Chávez, and the Rambla General García Escámez. Additionally, pedestrian space near the church will be expanded.

By carrying out these improvements—which range from road repairs to new landscaping and irrigation—the City Council aims to reduce accidents and create a safer, more accessible environment for residents. The largest investments will be concentrated on Avenida Pico Teide, Avenida El Rosario, and Plaza de los Patos.
