Santa Cruz de Tenerife Launches €2 Million Renovation of El Sobradillo Football Pitch
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has launched a two-million-euro renovation of the El Sobradillo football pitch as part of a broader initiative to upgrade sports infrastructure across the city's Southwest District by late 2026.
The renovation of the El Sobradillo football pitch, known locally as "El Galán," is the centerpiece of a plan to upgrade sports facilities across the Southwest District of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The City Council has allocated two million euros to the project, which was launched to repair structural damage caused by Storm Emilia—a weather event that forced the local government to declare an emergency to ensure the site remained safe for the public.
The project is expected to be finished by the end of 2026. Work is currently focused on installing perimeter fencing, following the demolition of the old changing rooms and the reinforcement of retaining walls near the road and the nearby ravine. This project is part of a broader, multi-year investment plan that has already seen six other facilities renovated over the last three years, including those in La Salud, Las Delicias, and Los Gladiolos.
City officials are aiming to balance urgent repairs with long-term planning. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez emphasized that these investments go beyond sports, serving as vital hubs for neighborhood life. Alongside the work at El Sobradillo, the Council has begun the process of tendering renovations for pitches in Barranco Grande and Tíncer. There are also plans to add roofs to the stands at four other venues, including El Tablero and Santa María del Mar.
Javier Rivero, the Southwest District councilor, noted that the El Galán project was particularly complex because water damage had affected not only the stability of the walls but also the site's electrical systems and basic infrastructure. By modernizing these facilities, the local administration hopes to meet the long-standing demands of grassroots clubs and ensure that all neighborhoods have access to safe, high-quality spaces for physical activity and community engagement.
