Santa Cruz de Tenerife Launches €1.6 Million Urban Logistics Digitalization Project
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is seeking 1.6 million euros in European funding to launch a digital logistics project featuring an AI-managed traffic system and a mobile app for optimizing urban delivery zones.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is moving forward with plans to modernize its urban logistics through a new digitalization project. The City Council has applied for 1.6 million euros in funding from Red.es, a program backed by the European Regional Development Fund, to overhaul how goods are delivered across the city.
The project is expected to begin this September and run throughout the coming year. A key feature is a new mobile app designed to manage loading and unloading zones. This system will allow drivers to reserve spaces in advance, monitor real-time availability, and follow dynamic access rules, all of which will support upcoming city regulations for urban deliveries.
The initiative also includes significant infrastructure upgrades. The city plans to expand its network of "smart" traffic lights, which will use artificial intelligence to prioritize certain vehicles and improve traffic flow. Additionally, a new congestion-monitoring system will be installed in key areas to automatically adjust traffic lights and alert logistics companies to accidents or delays. All this data will be managed from a new Mobility Control Center to ensure constant oversight of city traffic.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez’s administration views this investment as a way to boost the local economy and encourage digital growth. Evelyn Alonso, head of the Department of Mobility and Universal Accessibility, emphasized that these tools are designed to provide practical, digital solutions for local businesses, making the city more efficient for entrepreneurs and commercial activity.
