Writer Marta González de Vega opened the 532nd anniversary celebrations of Santa Cruz de Tenerife with a speech emphasizing the role of humor in fostering social unity and local identity.

The May Festivities in Santa Cruz de Tenerife have officially begun, with this year’s opening ceremony highlighting the power of comedy to bring people together and ease social tension. Writer and screenwriter Marta González de Vega kicked off the celebrations with a speech at García Sanabria Park, attended by local officials.

Rather than just looking back at the city’s history, González de Vega used her speech to reflect on local identity. She argued that the ability to laugh at ourselves—a spirit captured in traditions like the bailes de magos—is a vital tool for resolving conflicts. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez praised her message and commended her for staying connected to her roots despite her success in the national film industry.

This year’s festivities are particularly significant as they mark the 532nd anniversary of the city’s founding, reinforcing Santa Cruz’s role as a key hub for the Canary Islands. The opening event featured music from a band directed by Víctor Estárico and vocals by Isabel González, setting the stage for a busy cultural calendar.

The celebrations continue this week, with Plaza de la Candelaria serving as the main venue. The Queen’s Gala takes place this Friday at 9:00 p.m., followed by the election of the Senior Queen on Saturday, April 25, at 8:00 p.m. On Sunday, April 26, at 5:30 p.m., the candidates for Child Maga and Mago will be presented, rounding out an opening schedule designed to bring all generations together.
