Santa Cruz de Tenerife Ignites Christmas with 4.5 Million LED Bulbs
Santa Cruz de Tenerife will illuminate over 400 locations with 4.58 million energy-efficient LED bulbs on November 20th, marking the official start of its Christmas season with a €900,000 lighting project designed to foster community spirit and economic activity across all districts.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife will officially kick off its Christmas season on November 20th at 7:30 PM, when the city council switches on the festive lights. This year's display will use a staggering 4,580,000 LED bulbs.
The lighting project, costing 900,000 euros, will brighten over 400 locations across the city. It includes 2,172 lamppost decorations, 119 arches spanning streets, more than 92,000 meters of garlands, and 86 ground displays.
Key roads like Benito Pérez Armas, Manuel Hermoso Rojas, Príncipes de España, Francisco La Roche Avenue, the area around Cuartel San Carlos, and Plaza San Telmo have received special attention. Popular shopping streets such as Rambla Pulido, Calle El Pilar, and Villalba Hervás will also be more brightly lit. Additionally, Calle Álvarez de Lugo and the avenues Islas Canarias and Ángel Romero will be illuminated this year.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez stated that the Christmas lights are a vital part of the city's identity during the holidays, helping Santa Cruz become a hub for gatherings, community spirit, and economic activity. He highlighted that this year, there's a particular focus on neighborhoods and city entrances to ensure the Christmas spirit is felt throughout the entire municipality.
Carlos Tarife, the Councilor for Public Services, noted that all the lighting uses energy-efficient LED technology, providing better coverage and quality without increasing electricity use. Preparations for a more sustainable, accessible, and consistent Christmas across all districts have been underway since July.
Javier Caraballero, the Councilor for Festivals, added that Christmas is a highly anticipated time in Santa Cruz, and the aim is for both residents and visitors to experience the city as a welcoming, lively, and engaging place. He described the lighting as the first step in a broad program of festive events designed for families and outdoor celebrations, a tradition in the capital.
In Plaza del Príncipe, special stands have been set up to protect the old trees from decorations. New eye-catching elements include a 25-meter-tall Christmas tree near Plaza de España and a large, 10x10 meter microlamp ball in Plaza del Patriotismo, along with other figures placed in prominent squares and areas.
The Anaga district will see 6 street arches, 228 illuminated decorations, and 15 ground displays in its towns and busy spots. The Southwest district is installing 335 illuminated motifs and 3 ground elements along its main roads and community areas.
In the Ofra-Costa Sur district, there will be 391 illuminated motifs, 4,800 meters of garlands, and 3 ground displays. Salud – La Salle will feature 290 illuminated motifs, 28,000 meters of garlands, and 8 ground elements. The Centro-Ifara district will have 103 street arches, 895 illuminated motifs, 56,400 meters of garlands, and 46 ground elements.
The City Council reminds everyone that the Christmas lights are part of a larger plan for the season, which includes cultural events, children's activities, concerts, markets, and initiatives to boost local businesses in various neighborhoods. The goal is to encourage community involvement and make the streets a place for meeting, togetherness, and celebration throughout the festive period.
