Santa Cruz de Tenerife Hosts Tribute to Poet Pedro García Cabrera

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is celebrating the vibrant poetry of the Canary Islands this week with a special event dedicated to the writer Pedro García Cabrera. Hosted by the Cabildo Bookstore and managed by Ideco, the latest session of The Literary Café: The Rhapsodist’s Hour will take place this Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Titled The Offered Voice, the event moves beyond a standard reading to offer a collaborative interpretation of the poet’s work. Philologist Benigno León Felipe, of the Canary Academy of the Language, and presenter Roberto Toledo Palliser will lead the recital. Their goal is to highlight the oral tradition behind the poetry of García Cabrera, whose life—spanning from his birth in La Gomera in 1905 to his death in Tenerife in 1981—remains vital to understanding 20th-century Spanish literature.

The event honors an intellectual who, while associated with the famous "Generation of '27" writers, maintained a unique voice shaped by his island roots and a deep commitment to civil liberties. With his background in Hispanic Philology, León Felipe will provide expert insight into a legacy that continues to be studied for its blend of island landscapes and humanist values.

This tribute to the author of La rodilla en el agua (The Knee in the Water) is part of a broader effort by local institutions to make poetry more accessible to the public. By using a two-voice recital format, the organizers hope to bring the written word to life, allowing the audience to rediscover the power and rhythm of one of the Canary Islands' most important literary figures.
