Santa Cruz de Tenerife Hosts Theatrical Tours Honoring Playwright Ángel Guimerá
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is hosting a series of immersive theatrical tours exploring the life and legacy of playwright Ángel Guimerá through historical recreations of the city in the 1920s.
Using theater to bring history to life has become a powerful way to connect the community in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This Saturday, the city will host a new series of theatrical tours centered on the life and legacy of playwright Ángel Guimerá. More than just a performance, these tours serve as a journey into the city’s past, exploring the local identity and urban landscape of the 1920s.
Coordinated by the Autonomous Organization of Culture (OAC) and Burka Teatro, the tour winds through historic spots like the Church of the Conception, Calle de La Noria, and Plaza Isla de la Madera. With guidance from historian Néstor Verona, the production recreates the social atmosphere of 1924 and 1925—the years surrounding the death of Guimerá, the namesake of the city’s main theater.
While all three performances scheduled for this Saturday are already sold out, the project has also reached out to the community through the "Guimerá Vital" program. Earlier this month, special sessions were held for students and senior citizens, highlighting how culture can bridge the gap between generations by sharing local history in an engaging, hands-on way.
Directed by Nacho Almenar, the one-hour production features actors Tairuma Méndez, Antonio Conejo, Baltasar Islas, Charo Febles, and Mar Gutiérrez. Designed for audiences aged 12 and up, the tour turns public streets into a living stage, inviting residents to step back in time and experience the cultural legacy of a century ago.
