Santa Cruz de Tenerife Hosts Free Comic Book Day to Boost Local Economy
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is hosting Free Comic Book Day on Ramón y Cajal Street this Saturday, featuring over 2,800 comic giveaways, creative workshops, and a themed culinary route to boost local commerce in the Duggi neighborhood.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is using cultural events to breathe new life into its city streets. As part of the 2023-2028 Commerce Master Plan, the city council has announced that Free Comic Book Day will return to Ramón y Cajal Street this Saturday, May 16. The initiative aims to boost the local economy in the Duggi neighborhood by using popular culture to draw in crowds.
The event runs from 10:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and is backed by the Development Society, along with local comic shops Comic-Sería and Cómics y Mazmorras. Organizers plan to give away over 2,800 free comic books throughout the day. Carmen Pérez, CEO of the Development Society, noted that the event brings together more than 14 local small businesses and independent professionals to blend literature with local shopping.
The program offers plenty of activities beyond just collecting comics. Attendees can join workshops on modeling, pixel art, jewelry making, and professional inking and coloring techniques led by Calígula Studio. Other highlights include a cosplay photography contest, a masterclass on customizing Blythe dolls, and a themed escape room.
Local restaurants and cafes are also joining the fun with a special "Tapa Route," featuring dishes inspired by comics and anime. Participating businesses include Pastelería Pinna’s, Sonomamma, Ven a Casa Vivi, Pizzería Al Vuelo, Guayota Cafetería, and Pastry & Doughnuts. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez highlighted that this mix of food, retail, and culture has become a staple of the city’s calendar, successfully promoting both local heritage and economic growth.
