Santa Cruz de Tenerife Finalizes Low Emission Zone Rules with 18-Month Grace Period

Santa Cruz de Tenerife has officially finalized the rules for its new Low Emission Zone (ZBE), as announced in the Official Gazette of the Province this Monday, August 24. While the legal process is now complete, the City Council has decided to delay any traffic restrictions to allow for a gradual rollout.

The city has set an 18-month grace period, starting 15 days after the official publication. During this time, the new regulations will serve an educational purpose only. Drivers will not face any fines or access bans, and traffic will continue to move freely throughout the city.

This approach aims to avoid the public frustration seen in other Spanish cities, where complex environmental labels and technical rules have caused confusion. The local government plans to use this period to run awareness campaigns, helping residents and visitors understand the new mobility model before any penalties are introduced.

These changes are part of the Law on Climate Change and Energy Transition, which requires cities with over 50,000 residents to create low-emission zones to improve air quality and lower carbon emissions. By taking this step, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is meeting European sustainability standards while prioritizing a smooth transition for its citizens over immediate enforcement.
