The Santa Cruz City Council faces criticism for prioritizing a 1.4 million euro technology hub over a municipal shelter at the Diego Crosa building, with local associations urging officials to resolve the dispute without delaying social inclusion policies.

The management of public resources in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has sparked a fresh debate over the city’s urban and social priorities. The neighborhood association El Perenquén argues that disagreements between local groups should not be used as an excuse for institutional inaction. The organization has distanced itself from the La Arboleda platform—which represents residents in the Salamanca, Uruguay, and Las Acacias areas—noting that the final decision on where to place social services rests solely with public authorities.

The controversy centers on the future of the Diego Crosa building, located in the Santos ravine. While some local groups want the building turned into a municipal shelter, the Santa Cruz City Council has chosen a different direction. The local government plans to invest 1.4 million euros to transform the vacant property into a technology hub focused on digital animation and video game development.

Silvia Barrera, president of El Perenquén, believes that respecting neighborhood concerns does not mean authorities should avoid providing a clear plan. The association insists that the government must not use community disputes as a reason to delay social inclusion policies. This situation highlights the common tension in cities between the need for social facilities and plans for economic modernization—a balance that local political leaders have yet to resolve.
