The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has established a technical committee to develop a proactive emergency action plan for potential volcanic activity from Mount Teide.

Risk management in the Canary Islands is becoming more proactive. As reported by Televisión Canaria, the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has established a technical committee to create a formal action plan in the unlikely event that Mount Teide becomes active again. Led by Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez, this initiative aims to move away from reactive measures and toward structured, long-term planning to protect the city.

The council’s strategy focuses on ensuring that essential services remain resilient. The committee—made up of officials from Infrastructure, Emergencies, Citizen Security, Sustainability, and Budgeting—is auditing the city’s water and electricity networks. The goal is to ensure these services can continue to support both residents and those displaced from other parts of the island during a crisis.

Logistically, Santa Cruz is preparing to act as a central hub for emergency support. The plan includes using municipal sports facilities as temporary shelters, with additional support from private organizations like the Real Club Náutico de Tenerife. This public-private partnership highlights the importance of community cooperation in managing large-scale emergencies.

While the mayor has urged residents to remain calm, the committee was formed in response to technical assessments describing current geological activity as unusual. The group will produce a confidential report to ensure clear, coordinated communication with the Cabildo de Tenerife and the regional government without causing unnecessary alarm. By prioritizing preventive governance, the city is ensuring it is prepared for high-impact, low-probability events.
