The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has launched an urban reorganization strategy that includes the controversial demolition of recently renovated bocce courts in Ofra alongside new pedestrian infrastructure and long-term road improvement plans.

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has launched a new urban reorganization strategy that focuses on removing unused sports facilities rather than restoring public spaces. The most notable example is the demolition of the Santa Clara bocce courts in the Ofra district, a facility that was fully renovated just four years ago.

The project, which costs 36,611 euros and is expected to take one month, involves removing all benches, shelters, and lighting, as well as tearing down the enclosures and asphalt. The council plans to cover the area with gravel, leaving the land empty for future use once the ground and drainage systems are adjusted.

This work is part of the "Urban Impulse" plan, which aims to reshape the city’s public areas. At the same time, the council has set aside 27,996 euros for two projects to improve pedestrian access in the Ofra-Costa Sur district. Over the next four to five weeks, crews will install a new pedestrian crossing with improved signage on Calle Maximino Acea Perdomo and widen the sidewalk near the Santa Teresa de Jesús church on Camino del Hierro to improve safety.

Looking further ahead, the city is planning its infrastructure for the next three years. In the Centro-Ifara district, officials are currently assessing 27 streets to see which should be repaved by 2027. This study, part of a broader road rehabilitation agreement, will help the city prioritize repairs and improve traffic flow across the capital.
