The renovation of Block 7 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has transformed an aging 1970s residential building into a sustainable, fully accessible model for modern urban housing using EU funding.

The renovation of Block 7 in the Los Verodes neighborhood of Santa Cruz de Tenerife marks a major shift in how the city manages its aging housing. According to the City Council, this project does more than just fix maintenance issues; it serves as a model for how 1970s residential buildings can meet modern standards for sustainability and social inclusion, supported by Next Generation EU funding.

Led by JTP Richard Arquitectos, the project exceeded its original energy efficiency goals. By installing a solar-powered hot water system and upgrading all common area lighting to motion-sensor LEDs, the building has cut its non-renewable energy consumption by over 65%—surpassing the targets set for this type of renovation.

The project also has a significant social impact for the 16 families living there. The building, which previously lacked basic accessibility, now features a new electric elevator and has been retrofitted to remove architectural barriers. With improved access points and the addition of Braille and tactile signage, the building is now fully accessible for residents with reduced mobility.

The renovation was particularly challenging because residents remained in their homes throughout the construction, requiring strict safety and coordination protocols. The project also prioritized the environment, utilizing circular economy principles to recycle 70% of the construction waste. By extending the building's lifespan, the project ensures that residents can continue to live in their homes with independence and dignity.
