Santa Cruz de Tenerife Celebrates Community Spirit with Annual Flower Cross Festival
The May 3rd festivities in Santa Cruz de Tenerife showcased a resurgence of community spirit as neighborhoods successfully used creative crowdfunding and local collaboration to revive traditional flower cross competitions.
The May 3rd celebration in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has become more than just a local tradition; this year, it served as a clear sign of the city’s strong community spirit. The festivities, particularly the Natural Flower Cross Competition, highlighted how reviving local customs can bring residents together.
The success of the Las Palmitas Neighborhood Association is a perfect example of this community drive. After a break from the competition, the group returned to take first place. Led by a small team of neighbors and a floral professional, they launched a crowdfunding campaign to fund their impressive five-meter-high cross, which is now on display on Avenida Islas Canarias. Their achievement reflects a growing trend in the city: neighborhoods are finding creative, independent ways to fund and preserve their cultural heritage despite limited budgets.
Other winners in the natural flower category included Arcipreste, the Tamaragua Cultural Center, the San Gerardo Neighborhood Association, and the Real Club Náutico de Tenerife. Meanwhile, local schools—including Ágora, Hermano Pedro, and Chamberí—led the way in the recycled materials category, helping to teach students the importance of environmental awareness.
Beyond the competition, the event succeeded in bringing people together and breathing new life into public spaces. The Las Palmitas Neighborhood Association is already planning to include the project in its 2027 budget, showing that residents are committed to making this a long-term tradition for the neighborhood.
