The May 3rd festivities in Santa Cruz de Tenerife once again proved to be a vital part of the city’s identity, blending the celebration of its founding with the beloved tradition of floral crosses. This year, the event coincided with Mother’s Day, drawing even larger crowds to iconic spots like the Rambla, which served as the heart of this beautiful botanical exhibition.
The festival is rooted in history, marking May 3, 1494, when Alonso Fernández de Lugo landed on the coast of Añazo and erected the cross that symbolizes the city’s birth. As Santa Cruz celebrates its 532nd anniversary, local groups have used the floral competition to showcase their creativity. Entries ranged from celebrations of local sporting achievements—such as the recent promotion of Club Deportivo Tenerife—to scientific and cultural tributes. Notably, the Official College of Pharmacists and the Pharmaceutical Cooperative of Tenerife honored researcher Wolfredo Wildpret de la Torre by creating a display featuring thirteen native medicinal plant species.
Local schools also played a major role, using the event as a hands-on history lesson. Students created displays depicting everything from the 1797 defense against Horatio Nelson to the historic visit of Pope Leo XIV.
