Santa Cruz de Tenerife celebrates its 532nd anniversary with a series of cultural events, including the traditional flower cross competition, a local book fair, and a commemorative procession.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife celebrates its 532nd anniversary this May 3rd. According to the city council, this year’s events focus on celebrating the city's history and encouraging community involvement. The anniversary has become a key moment for cultural and social life, blending religious tradition with modern art.
The highlight of the celebration is the traditional flower cross competition, with 24 displays set up across the city’s districts. A panel of experts will judge these installations, with winners announced on Monday. Alongside this, the 17th School Cross Competition promotes sustainability, featuring 36 schools that have turned recycled waste into decorative art.
The Rambla de Santa Cruz is the center of the action, hosting a dozen crosses from local institutions, businesses, and organizations, including the City Council and Club Deportivo Tenerife. The city’s Book Fair is also taking place, with events held at the Alfonso García Ramos and Ángel Guimerá cultural spaces to support local authors.
The official ceremony begins at 7:00 p.m. at the Parroquia Matriz de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción. Bishop Eloy Santiago will lead a mass accompanied by the Tenerife Contemporary Choir, followed by a procession of the Foundational Cross. The procession will feature the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, and Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez, traveling through the streets of Santo Domingo, La Noria, and Padre Moore.
The program also includes family-friendly activities, such as a painting competition at García Sanabria Park. These events reflect the city's commitment to preserving the traditions that define its identity. For a full schedule and more information, residents can visit the city council’s official website.
