Santa Cruz de Tenerife Brings Film Festival Culture to Local Neighborhoods
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council is hosting a series of free film screenings in the Residencial Anaga neighborhood to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Fimucité festival and increase local access to cultural events.
Bringing culture out of city centers and into local neighborhoods is a growing priority for Spanish municipal governments. This summer, the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council is putting this strategy into action by hosting a series of free film screenings at the Residencial Anaga square from July 3 to 6. The event is a collaboration between the local district office and the Tenerife International Film Music Festival (Fimucité).
The screenings serve as a lead-up to Fimucité’s 20th anniversary. Over the last two decades, the festival has become a major European event, bringing world-class film composers to the island. By hosting these screenings, organizers hope to highlight the importance of film scores while making high-quality culture more accessible to local residents.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez stated that the goal is to strengthen community ties by turning local squares into gathering spots for people of all ages. Purificación Dávila, the councilwoman for the Centro-Ifara District, added that the initiative is designed to bring cultural events directly to the public, removing the need for residents to travel to the city center.
This approach reflects a broader trend in Canary Island capitals, where public spaces are increasingly being used to foster social cohesion. Through this program, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is celebrating the festival’s history while reaffirming its commitment to making art and entertainment a part of everyday neighborhood life.
