The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council is increasing police patrols and streamlining crime reporting in its commercial district to address security concerns raised by local business owners ahead of the busy holiday shopping season.

The municipal government of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is prioritizing security in the city’s commercial hub following concerns raised by local business owners. According to Diario de Avisos, the City Council has partnered with the Zona Centro Merchants Association to increase police patrols, involving both local and national forces, to help business owners feel more secure.

This increased presence is particularly important ahead of busy shopping periods like Black Friday and the Christmas season. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez noted that the issue is complex; business owners are concerned not only about theft but also about social challenges, including the presence of individuals struggling with mental health or addiction. These tensions recently led some shops on Calle del Castillo to board up their windows during Halloween.

In addition to more police on the streets, the City Council is working to simplify the process for reporting crimes. Currently, filing a police report takes significant time away from business operations, and officials are looking for ways to streamline this, though specific details and timelines have yet to be finalized.

The city is also planning changes to street furniture to discourage the misuse of public spaces. This includes a trial program to replace large benches with individual seats. These efforts are being coordinated across several city departments to support both economic growth and better public management.

The local government emphasized that while security will be tightened, all actions regarding vulnerable populations will follow strict legal guidelines. The goal is to ensure a safer environment for businesses in the capital while maintaining an open dialogue with merchants to monitor the effectiveness of these new measures.
