Santa Cruz de Tenerife has increased its 2026 budget by 21.5 million euros, utilizing surplus funds to cover essential services, staff salary adjustments, and infrastructure repairs.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is boosting its 2026 budget with an extra 21.5 million euros to keep municipal finances on track. Following a recent Governing Board meeting, the City Council confirmed this move, bringing the city’s total spending limit to 381.2 million euros. The funds, drawn from 2025 budget surpluses and the city’s contingency fund, are designed to cover essential costs and unexpected expenses.

The budget increase is split into two main areas:

First, 13.9 million euros will go toward settling existing payment obligations. This includes over 6 million euros for social services and citizen support programs. The rest of this portion will fund basic city services, such as street lighting, public safety, traffic management, and the upkeep of schools and public buildings.

Second, 7.5 million euros has been set aside for operational needs not covered in the original budget. This includes salary increases for municipal staff, as required by current labor agreements for 2025–2026, and 500,000 euros to upgrade the city’s computer systems and technology.

The budget also addresses repairs from recent bad weather. This includes over 2 million euros to restore the El Galán soccer field in El Sobradillo and nearly 850,000 euros for repairs in the Anaga area following storm Therese. Additionally, the city is launching a neighborhood program for 2026–2027 to help long-term unemployed residents find work.

Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez’s administration describes this as a disciplined economic move, noting that using existing savings allows the city to fund these projects without jeopardizing its financial stability. The Finance Department added that this plan is essential for meeting current obligations while ensuring that vital public services continue to run smoothly.
