The Cabildo de Tenerife has launched a multi-phase renovation of the Santa Cruz transport interchange to replace aging mechanical access systems and double capacity by May.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is upgrading its transport infrastructure, marking a major turning point for the city’s main transit hub. As reported by Buenos Días Canarias on Televisión Canaria, the Cabildo de Tenerife has begun a full renovation of the mechanical access systems at the interchange, which serves nearly 60,000 passengers every day.

Eulalia García, the Minister of Mobility, explained that the current equipment is over 20 years old and in urgent need of replacement. To keep disruption to a minimum, the Cabildo is using a phased approach. Work is starting at the Avenida Tres de Mayo entrance, where the current units will be replaced with new ones, doubling the capacity from four to eight units.

The project is expected to take several months to ensure the hub remains operational throughout the construction. Once the first phase at Tres de Mayo is finished—estimated to take three to four months—crews will move to the southern sector near the Adán Martín Auditorium. The entire project is scheduled for completion by May, when all new systems should be fully functional.

This renovation is more than just routine maintenance; it is a vital step in improving the efficiency of the Canary Islands' transport network. By replacing equipment that has reached the end of its lifespan, the island administration aims to ensure that this key transit hub remains safe, accessible, and capable of handling the demands of modern public transport.
