The Santa Cruz de Tenerife government has scaled back plans to erect the largest Christmas tree in Spain, reducing its height and cost.

Remember last August when the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council promised to install the largest Christmas tree in Spain? They wanted to compete with Vigo, but it looks like not this year.

Carlos Tarife, who is responsible for public services, assured that the island's capital would have a 50-meter beauty, and it would cost 100,000 euros (that's just the rent!). He even joked that the mayor of Vigo should come to Santa Cruz to see the best illumination in the country.

But less than a month later, everything changed. The same Tarife said in an interview with Cadena Ser that the tree would be "big and beautiful, about 30 meters high," and would cost not 100,000, but about 43,000 euros.

The good news is that the tree will still be in its usual place – on the lake of the Plaza de España.

The mayor of the city, José Manuel Bermúdez, once explained that Santa Cruz has been betting on Christmas for many years, and the city is a landmark for all the Canary Islands. That is why they start preparing in advance to make sure everything is on time. He also emphasized that Christmas illumination not only makes the city more beautiful, but also helps local shops, hotels, and attracts tourists.
