The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has awarded a €3.72 million contract to transform Santa Catalina Park in La Gallega into a 14,000-square-meter inclusive and sustainable leisure space.

The long-awaited transformation of Santa Catalina Park in La Gallega, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is finally moving forward. The City Council has officially awarded the construction contract to Probisa Vías y Obras SLU, clearing the way for what will become one of the largest inclusive leisure spaces in the Canary Islands.

The project represents a total investment of 3.72 million euros, with over 1.2 million provided by the Island Council. The work is scheduled to take two years, with 1.14 million euros allocated for this year and 2.57 million for 2027. While construction was initially expected to begin late this year, the start date depends on the formalization of the contract, which must follow a mandatory 15-day period for potential appeals from other bidders.

Spanning nearly 14,000 square meters between Avenida Cercado Corazón and surrounding streets, the project is far more than a simple renovation. Its primary goal is universal accessibility, ensuring that children of all abilities can play together in the same space. The design also emphasizes environmental sustainability, with 75% of the area dedicated to green space, preserving existing plants and creating natural shade.

This project is a direct result of the 2023 participatory budget process, where local residents requested a complete overhaul of the area. Beyond new play equipment, the plans include improved lighting, better drainage and sanitation, and the addition of essential facilities like self-cleaning restrooms. By moving forward with this contract, the City Council aims to address a long-standing lack of public amenities in the neighborhood while meeting modern standards for accessible urban design.
