Santa Cruz de Tenerife Awards €1.7 Million Contract to Revitalize La Salud Neighborhood
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has awarded a €1.7 million contract to revitalize the La Salud neighborhood by demolishing the old San Gerardo church and transforming the site into a cohesive public space for sports and recreation.
The La Salud neighborhood in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is entering the final stage of its urban transformation. The City Council has awarded a €1.7 million contract to the company Ecocivil Electromur to demolish the old San Gerardo church and reorganize the surrounding area.
This project covers 7,700 square meters and aims to fix the fragmented layout between Plaza José Carlos Schwartz and the former church site, which currently includes disconnected parking and roads. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez is leading this initiative as part of a broader effort to improve neighborhood cohesion in areas that have historically lacked long-term planning.
Javier Rivero, head of the Infrastructure department, stated that the project responds to residents' requests for better accessibility and social spaces. The plan will transform 4,300 square meters of underutilized land—currently used for surface parking and neglected gardens—into a space designed for all ages.
A key feature of the project is the creation of a new hub for sports and recreation, addressing the current lack of facilities in this part of the capital. Beyond removing the obsolete building, the plan includes new pedestrian paths to improve safety and traffic flow. Through this work, the City Council hopes to turn a disjointed area into a central landmark for the daily lives of local residents.
