Santa Cruz de Tenerife has approved the transfer of municipal land to the regional government to construct a new health center in the city’s Southwest district, aiming to alleviate pressure on existing facilities and improve local medical access.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is set to expand its primary healthcare network following a key decision by the City Council. The local government has officially approved the transfer of a municipal plot of land to the Canary Islands regional government, clearing the way for a new health center in the city’s Southwest district.

The project now enters a 20-day public consultation period following its announcement in the Official Gazette of the Province. The site, a 1,947-square-meter plot located at the Cercado Corazón roundabout in the El Rosario industrial estate, was chosen to better serve the rapidly growing populations of El Sobradillo, Llano del Moro, El Tablero, and La Gallega.

This new facility is designed to relieve pressure on the existing Barranco Grande health center, which is currently struggling to keep up with patient demand. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez emphasized that cooperation between local and regional authorities is vital to fast-tracking the project, which is a priority for improving essential services in the city’s most populated areas.

Javier Rivero, the district councilor, confirmed that technical studies have verified the site is suitable for healthcare use. The center’s design is also scalable, meaning it can be expanded to include additional services as the community’s needs evolve. With this move, the City Council aims to address a long-standing shortage of healthcare facilities and ensure that residents in the Southwest have better access to public medical care.
