The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has launched a €45,000 subsidy program to help local taxi drivers install security cameras and protective partitions to enhance safety.

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has approved a new €45,000 aid package to improve safety for local taxi drivers. This initiative addresses long-standing requests from the industry for better tools to manage the risks faced during their daily shifts.

The program offers direct subsidies of up to €300 per vehicle to help drivers install security cameras and protective partitions. These additions are designed to deter assaults and help prevent fare evasion. To ensure the funding is distributed fairly, the council is prioritizing applications from female drivers and license holders over the age of 50.

To qualify for the grant, applicants must hold a valid taxi license, have completed their mandatory annual vehicle and health inspections, be registered in the city’s payment system, and not have received this specific grant in 2021.

This move follows a trend in major Spanish cities where public transport safety has become a top priority. While the use of in-vehicle cameras often sparks discussions about privacy, they are increasingly recognized as an effective way to resolve disputes and provide legal protection for both drivers and passengers. By funding these upgrades, the local government aims to improve service quality and better protect taxi drivers, who are often uniquely vulnerable while working in public spaces.
