Santa Cruz de Tenerife Approves €3.1 Million Remodeling Plan for Nuestra Señora de África Market Area
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has approved a €3.1 million, two-phase renovation project to improve accessibility and modernize the public space surrounding the Nuestra Señora de África Market.
The area surrounding the Nuestra Señora de África Market in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is set for a major transformation. The local government has approved a €3.1 million remodeling plan to modernize the streets around this key city hub, focusing on better mobility and accessibility. The project will be completed in two nine-month phases.
The plan aims to redesign the public space by creating a single-level surface, removing curbs and uneven ground to make the area more accessible. This design encourages a better balance between pedestrians and vehicles and will incorporate part of the downhill lane of Avenida José Manuel Guimerá. Additionally, the staircase at the back of the market will be replaced with a landscaped ramp to ensure universal access.
Work has been scheduled to minimize disruption for local residents and businesses. The first phase will focus on Calle Darias y Padrón and Bethencourt y Molina, including updates to terraces and the access ramp. Throughout this stage, maintaining delivery routes and access to private homes remains a top priority.
The second phase will move to the Rambla and surrounding streets, including Calle José Manuel Guimerá. This work will involve reorganizing parking spaces and kiosk layouts. This project aligns with broader sustainable mobility trends in Spain, which prioritize reclaiming public spaces for citizens and revitalizing commercial centers by improving the environment and removing physical barriers.
