Santa Cruz de Tenerife Approves €1.9 Million Revitalization Project for La Salud Neighborhood
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has approved a 1.9 million euro redevelopment project for the La Salud neighborhood, featuring the demolition of the old San Gerardo church to create new parking and a modernized public square.
The La Salud neighborhood in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is set for a major transformation. The local government has officially approved the demolition of the old San Gerardo church, a long-awaited move that marks the first step in revitalizing an area that has sat unused for years.
The project, which has a budget of over 1.9 million euros, will be carried out in stages between 2026 and 2027. The plan focuses on a 7,700-square-meter plot, starting with the demolition of the church to make room for 80 new parking spaces. This is intended to help ease the chronic traffic and parking issues that residents have faced for decades.
Beyond parking, the project includes a complete overhaul of the José Carlos Schwartz square. The renovation will remove architectural barriers, replace old paving, and add new street furniture. The updated space will also feature a children’s play area, a drinking fountain, a self-cleaning restroom, and a covered area for game tables, all designed to bring the community together.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez stated that the goal is to improve safety and accessibility while reversing the decline of the district. Javier Rivero, the Councilor for Works and Infrastructure, noted that the project balances long-term improvements with immediate solutions for the neighborhood's needs. Zaida González, the Councilor for the Salud-La Salle district, added that this work fulfills a long-standing request from residents and represents a significant turning point for the area.
The work is expected to take 12 months to complete. In addition to surface improvements, the project includes upgrading essential infrastructure, such as drainage systems and public lighting. This initiative is part of a larger, phased plan to ensure the redevelopment of the San Gerardo area directly addresses the needs of the local community.
