Santa Cruz de Tenerife has approved a €1.9 million project to demolish the disused San Gerardo church and revitalize the surrounding La Salud neighborhood with new public amenities, parking, and infrastructure improvements.

The La Salud neighborhood in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is set for a major transformation. The local government has approved a project to demolish the old, disused San Gerardo church and reorganize the surrounding area. With a budget of over 1.9 million euros, the city council aims to address long-standing infrastructure issues and provide the neighborhood with much-needed services and better accessibility.

The project covers 7,700 square meters and is overseen by the Infrastructure and Works department. Beyond removing the old church, the plan includes creating 80 parking spaces and completely renovating the José Carlos Schwartz square. The new square will feature updated pavement, children’s play areas, tables for board games, water fountains, and a self-cleaning restroom. A key focus of the work is installing modern drainage and efficient lighting to ensure the area is safe and accessible for everyone.

City officials noted that the final design was shaped by feedback from the San Gerardo Neighborhood Association. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez highlighted that this collaboration with residents is essential for the success of any public project in an established neighborhood.

Once the contract is awarded, the work is expected to take 12 months to complete. The project will begin by transplanting existing trees and setting up a temporary parking area. This initiative reflects a broader effort to revitalize older residential areas, prioritizing community spaces and modern accessibility standards over simple construction.
