Santa Cruz de Tenerife Announces Packed Program for María Jiménez Neighborhood Festivities
The María Jiménez neighborhood in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is hosting a diverse program of cultural, social, and traditional festivities from June 6 to June 27 to foster community spirit and preserve local heritage.
Local festivities in the Anaga District of Santa Cruz de Tenerife are back in full swing this year, with the city council announcing a packed program for the María Jiménez neighborhood. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez emphasized that these events are about more than just entertainment; they play a vital role in bringing the community together and preserving the unique local traditions that define the area.
The festivities will run from June 6 to June 24. Councilor Gladis de León noted that the district is providing funding for the program, reflecting a commitment to community-led planning. The schedule is the result of a close partnership between local neighborhood associations and the municipal Festivities department, led by Javier Caraballero, ensuring a mix of family activities and traditional cultural events.
The celebrations kick off on June 6 at the Church square with a day for children and an evening party. On Sunday, June 7, the neighborhood will crown its Child Queen and Princess. The following weekend, June 12 and 13, will feature open-air dances and a classic car show. Cultural traditions take center stage on Sunday, June 14, with a folklore exhibition and a demonstration of "Juego del Palo," a traditional stick-fighting sport.
After a week of sports and social gatherings, the La Fuente de Tejina Musical Group will lead a traditional morning parade on Sunday, June 21. A highlight of this year’s program is the return of the San Juan Bonfires on June 23, made possible through coordination between the Island Council and the City Council.
The festivities conclude on June 24 with a church service and procession. Finally, on June 27, the neighborhood will host an excursion for seniors; those interested should register in advance, as space is limited.
