Santa Cruz de Tenerife Announces Major Traffic Restrictions for Papal Visit on June 12
Santa Cruz de Tenerife will implement a major traffic and mobility overhaul on June 12th, including highway closures and restricted access zones, to accommodate security requirements for Pope Leo XIV’s visit.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is preparing for a major traffic overhaul on June 12th to accommodate Pope Leo XIV’s visit. Due to strict international security requirements, the City Council has launched an unprecedented mobility plan that will significantly disrupt travel for residents and commuters arriving via the TF-1 and TF-5 highways.
The city’s strategy focuses on prioritizing public and chartered transport. To keep buses moving, exclusive lanes will be established on Avenida Tres de Mayo—heading upward from the Manuel Bethencourt del Río roundabout to the Rotary Club turbo-roundabout—and on Calle Fomento near the transport interchange. These areas will be monitored all day, with private vehicles strictly prohibited from driving or parking there.
Access to the coastline will be heavily restricted. The TF-4 motorway will close completely at 3:00 a.m., allowing only authorized vehicles. From 9:00 a.m., security will tighten further, reserving lanes specifically for official motorcades.
To handle the influx of visitors, the Citizen Security department has closed standard parking lots at the Maritime Park, the Palmetum, and Calle Víctor Zurita Soler, reserving them exclusively for buses. The City Council warns that this plan is subject to change at any moment, depending on the real-time needs of the papal security team.
This logistical operation highlights the complexity of hosting an international event in Santa Cruz. The coordination between state security and local traffic management will make June 12th an exceptional day, significantly altering travel across one of the Canary Islands' busiest metropolitan areas.
