Santa Cruz de Tenerife allocated 3.4 million euros in social aid between July and September, with over 80% of the funding dedicated to food security and housing stability for local residents.

Between July and September, Santa Cruz de Tenerife focused its social support efforts on two main priorities: food security and housing stability. According to Diario de Avisos, the City Council spent 3.4 million euros on Economic Benefits and Social Aid (PEAS) during this period, highlighting the most urgent needs of local residents.

The data shows that the majority of this funding went toward basic necessities. Food assistance, provided through partnerships with companies like Dinosol and Frionorte, accounted for 1.9 million euros, or 56.4% of the total budget. When combined with the 938,094 euros spent on rent, mortgages, and community fees—roughly 27% of the budget—it is clear that over 80% of the city’s social spending was dedicated to ensuring residents have food and a place to live.

The remaining funds supported other essential needs: 254,874 euros (7.3%) went toward disability support, and 322,665 euros (9.3%) covered household supplies and equipment. In total, these funds supported 14,874 administrative actions.

Charín González, the Councilor for Social Policies, noted that these figures should be viewed in the context of recent administrative changes. The city has moved away from the Municipal Institute of Social Care (IMAS) model, integrating social services as an autonomous body. Because this restructuring has changed how the city tracks and accounts for aid, officials advise that the quarterly figures be seen as a reflection of the city’s ongoing commitment to helping vulnerable families.

Ultimately, the City Council remains focused on protecting residents from housing instability and food insecurity, which continue to be the most significant indicators of social hardship in the municipality.
