Santa Cruz de Tenerife Advances Urban Transformation of María Jiménez with New Sports Complex
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council is advancing a major urban renewal project in María Jiménez, featuring a new 1.7-million-euro multifunctional sports complex expected to be completed by next September.
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council is currently focusing its investment efforts on the urban transformation of María Jiménez. The local government is working on three major projects in the area: building 37 subsidized homes, renovating an old school to serve as a headquarters for the "Sofocados" children's carnival troupe, and constructing a new multifunctional sports complex.
The sports complex, which has a budget of over 1.7 million euros, is particularly notable for its design. Spanning nearly 3,000 square meters, the facility will be a covered, open-air space supported by a large central arch. Inspired by the look of industrial greenhouses and aircraft hangars, the structure is designed to provide residents with a much-needed space protected from the elements.
During a recent visit to the site, Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez and other municipal officials announced that the project is now expected to be completed by next September. Javier Rivero, the Councilor for Public Works, explained that the delay is due to logistical issues involving the supply of materials from France, despite construction having started in June 2025.
The facility is designed to be more than just a sports venue. It will feature calisthenics equipment, children’s play areas, and bocce courts, all connected by accessible ramps and seating. By creating this versatile space, the city hopes to meet a long-standing request from residents and provide a hub for community, cultural, and leisure events as part of the neighborhood’s ongoing renewal.
