Santa Cruz Dance Showcase Highlights Local Talent and Professional Hurdles

The inaugural Santa Cruz baila event showcased Tenerife’s vibrant dance talent while highlighting the urgent need for better professional infrastructure to prevent local artists from having to relocate to the mainland.

The inaugural Santa Cruz baila event, held as part of the Tenerife capital’s May Festival, recently showcased the impressive energy of the local dance scene. The event brought over 400 dancers to the Plaza de Candelaria, highlighting the high technical standards maintained by academies across the island.

However, the event also shed light on a persistent challenge for the Canary Islands' performing arts sector: the difficulty of turning emerging talent into professional careers. The presence of Sofía Estrada Marrero, Moisés Díaz García, and Sabina González Quintero—members of The Block who will soon represent Spain at the World Urban Dance Championship in Phoenix—underscores this issue. The dancers noted that the region lacks the necessary competitive circuits for elite development, often forcing artists to move to the mainland to pursue international opportunities.

The showcase also highlighted the intense dedication required in dance, even among young children. The acrobatic routines and rhythmic precision displayed by performers under ten are the result of months of rigorous physical training and rehearsal—a level of commitment that far outweighs the short duration of the performances themselves.

While the municipal initiative was well-received, it has sparked a conversation about the need to expand such platforms. There is a growing call to bring these events to other parts of the island, providing the visibility and infrastructure needed to help dancers build professional careers without being held back by their geographic location.
